Chris Grall has created an indispensable tool for writers who want to get the details right, specifically when they write about firearms. The author sidesteps political discussions about guns in order to focus on their history and evolution, as well as on how they work—and how they fail. The detailed diagrams for each type of weapon are incredible, giving even writers with ZERO experience handling firearms a visual, tactile sense of where the parts of the gun are and how it feels to operate one. Best of all, though, are two writing-specific sections: a copy editing guide that explains the rules for writing accurately about the weapons and their ammunition; and a guide to selecting an appropriate sidearm for any character—especially useful for fiction writers. Can’t recommend this handy book enough!
If you are any type of creator, not just a writer, who might have any use for understanding firearms for use in a creative context, this is absolutely the ultimate resource available specifically for creatives. The full-color illustrations are amazingly helpful, and the writing is clear and accessible. I highly recommend.
TRIGGER GUARD is a book many writers need, and not just for information about specific weapons. Grall provides a concise history of firearms and ammunition that will inform writers of period pieces as well. The book is laid out in an easy to follow manner, with diagrams and, maybe best of all, links to videos that put in motion what is described. Grall’s writing style makes entertaining what could be a trudge through a dry listing of specifications. Recommended for any writers who might use a firearm in their books, as well as for laymen who have an interest in them.
